Academy Award® winner Helen Mirren and two-time Academy Award® nominee Tom Wilkinson star in The Debt, “a pulse-pounding and politically charged suspense thriller.” (Karen Durbin, Elle) In 1966, three Mossad agents were assigned to track down a feared Nazi war criminal hiding in East Berlin, a mission accomplished at great risk and personal cost – or was it? Thirty years later, the suspense builds as shocking news and surprising revelations compel retired team member Rachel Singer (Mirren) to take matters into her own hands. Co-starring Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Ciarán Hinds, it’s the film critics call “an intelligent thriller with superb performances.” (USA Today)

I normally love this type of spy/mossad thing even being glued to documentaries etc of a Sunday afternoon. So I had high hopes, given the quality of the cast and subject matter, so I struggle to know where it all went wrong. I did get through it to the end though so it can't have been all bad, but only because I spent the dull parts checking my facebook page. The only character I had any empathy for was the Nazi, don't get me wrong, I hated him and wanted him to see justice. But the rest of them could have been shot down in a border guard crossfire bloodbath and I would not have cared. If you watched this in the cinema you would happily have gone to the toilet halfway through and maybe even stopped for popcorn or even picknmix on the way back.

The film starts off promisingly but tails off. Overall, probably worth a watch but it's not nail biting stuff.

Taking an historical view of a period that all of western society want to forget. This movie gets there admirably... Yes I agree alot of the East Berlin stuff could be quicker but it helps build to a wonderful suspense built crescendo. Wonderfully acted, gripping throughout. I think as a piece of entertainment to keep you hooked for 2 hours, it is right up there. Schindler's List, Badher Meinhoff Complex it is not... Jolly good show...
