Description

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

Boy was a person I wouldn’t want to have coffee with, let alone watch him on screen for three hours.

Very disappointing...The idea is amazing, but the film....
  • ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED FILMS OF ALL TIME

A classic example of what happens when you combine a big name Director...a gimmicky production technique (Wow, they filmed it over 12 years with the SAME cast!) and a rambling script that oozes existentialist, navel-gazing pretensions...the Hollywood crowd and "film aficionados" go wild. Anyone with a modicum of intellectual honesty, however, should ask themselves if after 12 REAL TIME YEARS...we know ANYTHING even vaguely interesting or compelling about the lead character. Two hours and forty six minutes of running time later, we have no insight at all into his fears and aspirations, motivations or sense of humor (SPOILER ALERT - he has none). It's like watching a feather blowing aimlessly on a gust of wind. Only the last time we saw that feather...we were at least treated to a tight script, beautiful visual effects, warmth, humour and heart. Whereas, in this reviewer's opinion, Boyhood not only struck out narratively...it failed to deliver the one thing it was absolutely compelled to - humanity. Or maybe this is what Hollywood thinks humanity actually looks like.

This movie is great, and fun. I like this movie a lot. I love all of the characters in this movie. I love how they filmed this movie over 12 years and how the main character the little boy grew up in this movie over 12 years. It is one of my favorite movies.

This movie has its moments. It has good acting. But the narrative is not very compelling and the dialogue at times is mundane. After 3.5 hours, I did not feel that the movie was worth my time. I should have passed on this one.
  • Tried to watch this after all the rave reviews...

And lost interest very fast. As art or a film study this may be great. As entertainment I just thought it kind of sucked. I like dramas, I like good stories, I like... more than what this film was trying to say? It didnt jive with me and I really had trouble staying tuned. Not my cup of tea.
