Description

From internationally celebrated director Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House Of Flying Daggers) comes a story of love and war. The dangerous streets of Nanjing throw together a group of opposites –a flock of shell-shocked school children, a dozen seductive courtesans, and a renegade American (Academy Award® winner Christian Bale, The Fighter, The Dark Knight) posing as a priest to save his own skin, or so he thinks – all seeking safety behind a walled cathedral. Trapped by marauding soldiers, over the next few days the prejudices and divides between them will fall away as they unite around a last-ditch plan to protect the children from impending catastrophe.

The cast, costumes and storyline was a bright contrast against the harsh war backdrop The staccato Asian languages pierced the kind exchanges between enemies. One of the best "bittersweet" love stories I've watched. The beginning was a little slow but towards the end of movie, I wanted movie to go slower.

It's awesome to see Christian Bale in this movie. This is a story of powerful transformation when it's needed the most and how a person can change the out come of so much. It's a "coming of age " story for all who are involved. You'll be thankful you watched it.

The acting is great, but the real story is more interesting than this work of fiction.

This movie represents the strength, courage, and commitment of a people who died with honor. The cause or reasoning may never be quite understood as so many are not. However, honor and valor are never misunderstood.

This is truly a fantastic movie. As a Chinese/American mix, I always love hearing my mother's language in movies--it becomes very personal. It was my mother who told me about the Nanjing massacre, and I found the depiction of the atrocities very accurate. Additionally, the characters were very multi-dimensional. Bale, though following the typical hero cycle, is a good character. The Japanese were not all depicted as animals and rightly so. The Nanjing women were also very interesting characters, as they are elegant, ethereal beauties who can simultaneously be incredibly immature and selfish. However, it is the plight of the youth, the true innocents, that leads to the most disturbing images and stir such powerful emotions. You just want to jump into the movie to protect them. All in all, I have recommended this to all my friends, and I will be watching this with my mother and sister in the near future.

I was brought to this movie by one reason my obsession with Christian Bale and that only reason. But after watching it and really watching it , I fell deeply in love and intrigued with it for the whole meaning and history of the Rape of Nanking. It was a really great movie. I'd recommend.
