Description

A family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure and 6-year-old Jeanne, moves to a new suburban neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Seberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids, and decides to pass herself off as “Mikael,” a boy different enough to catch the attention of leader of the pack Lisa, who becomes smitten. At home with her parents and girlie younger sister, she is Laure: hanging out with her new pals and girlfriend, she is Mikael. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self, Laure takes advantage of her new identity, as if the end of the summer would never reveal her unsettling secret. Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story, which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one’s heart and body.

I remember finding this movie a while back and could never buy the full movie (had to rent it). It's awesome and even though it's in French you probably won't even mind that.

What a nice, refreshing movie to watch. You are taken on a journey as this girl discovers ways to fit in and be "one of the guys". This movie reminds me of myself when I was that age when I was a tomboy and wore boys clothes. It's hard not feeling like you fit in. The young actress does a great job portraying just how hard that can be.

While it is never openly stated in the movie i believe that Laure/mickäel is a closeted transgender boy. At home she is a girl and goes by the name laure but to the neighborhood kids she is just like the other guys and goes by the name mickäel. Even the younger sister states that she had done the same thing at their previous home. I think that the plot summary for the movie is a little deceptive to what the movie is about because she was never mistaken for a guy, she deliberately presented herself as a boy to the neighborhood kids. Well putting that all aside, I think this was an excellent movie and well worth the purchase. I will definitely be watching this movie again and it is one that I would recommend to all my friends and family.
