Description

This brilliant companion piece to the original The Godfather continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Coppola tells two stories in Part II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. Reassembling many of the talents who helped make The Godfather, Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision, and undeniably the best sequel ever made. Robert De Niro won an Oscar; the film received six Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1974.

The first two Godfathers feature what is probably the best overall cast of actors in US movie making history. From the giants at the top, Pacino, Brando, DeNiro, Duvall, all the way to the smallest cameo roles, everyone here is real and committed to the power of the project. But of course, that's not all. Francis Coppola is a genius director on the basis of these first 2 Godfathers and he added to that with Apocalypse Now and Conversation. So if you like cinematic storytelling at its best, you can start and end with Coppola's direction here. Along with the riveting saga of the Corleones, you get some of the most devastating social criticism of the so-called American ways of business, competition, and family values. With the addition of Godfather II to The Godfather, Coppola underscored what was great about the first film and went beyond it. Each of the 2 parts works wonderfully on its own, but together, unbeatable. Al Pacino's best performance, and the same goes for several other.actors here, but Pacino is the revelation, just astonishing in complexity and range, with his moment at the very end of Part II unsurpassed in the darkest power, beauty, and pain.

Parts 1 amd 2 are among my favorite movies ever. Just rewatched them and these longer versions are great. So I decide to watch the extras and the first one is talking about 1 and 2 then all of a sudden they start talking about 2 and give a major spoiler! This is an extra for part 2 and then you tell people that someone dies in part 3????????? Not happy, haven’t seen 3 yet.

The person who commented that subtitles are not included is incorrect. The film includes English subtitles for the parts of the film spoken in Sicilian. There are some scenes where Sicilian is spoken where Coppola never included subtitles for artistic reasons. But the parts that always had subtitles are included here.

I've lost track of the number of times I've watched this movie. I never get tired of it. Al Pacino is brilliant. His face, I believe, will ever be associated with The Godfather. However, I wish movies stopped using the word "intermission" when, in reality, they should start saying what they really mean: "Restroom Break."
