Description

Delft, Holland 1665. Seventeen-year-old Griet must work to support her family and becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer, where she gradually attracts the master painter's attention. Johannes and Griet must hide their inspiration of each other from his volatile wife Catharina. The wealthy and troublemaking Master van Ruijven senses the intimacy between the artist and his maid and contrives a commission for Vermeer to paint Griet alone. The result will be one of the greatest paintings ever created, but at what cost?

  • A history, not a drama

The characters are not very deeply drawn, despite the talented actors. This film is more a documentary drama. It is lacking in essential drama.
  • Could have been great.

While I did enjoy the movie just a bit, it left a lot to be desired. Even the actors couldn't save the horrendous script. The story should be told; such a shame the writers mangled it.
  • Johansson / Firth ...excellent

A nice romp through a fairy tail history story. Both Colin and Scarlett nail it. Thumbs up! For those not familiar with Vermeer, I suggest checking out a documentary called "Tim's Vermeer". It provides insight as to the technique Vermeer may have used, as his paintings are so close to photography.

I have read the book and loved it. The movie is really good too. Storyline and characters remain true to the book. Beautiful costumes, scenery and artwork. Provides an interesting glimpse into the past!
  • Just Eh Compared to the Book

The book was absolutely amazing but this portrayal is less detailed and interesting. You don't see as much of Pieter as you do in the book, which is personally my favorite character. They don't really give Greit a background and do not allow her character to grow in the movie as she does in the novel. Just like most movie portrayals, this doesn't even come close to the fantastic book.

this has to be one of the worst movies i have ever seen in entire life. has absolutely no relevance to the book of witch it is based on. random scenes placed together with no actual connection. the book of which this movie is based upon is mainly comprised of thoughts in Griets (the main character) head, without these thoughts the movie makes no sense and is a maze of confusing and poorly acted emotions. watching this movie was pure torture, i highly recommend you dont spend your money on this terrible film.

This has been and still is one of my favorite movies. I loved everything about it. it's the kind of movie that I find myself watching over and over again. Maybe not right away but its the kind of movie that I kind myself thinking about at random moments even though I hadn't watched it in years or months. It's a great movie and Colin Firth and Scarlet Johansson are just awesome!

This movie is great at showing what one should try to see when looking at a piece of art: it doesn't have to talk to have a story behind it. This movie is a very quite movie, having the two leads, Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson barely speaking. It is beautifully thought out and the color schemes were obvious in needing to tell the story. Gorgeous film.

With all the good reviews I was expecting something awesome...but it was really boring and at the end the painting totally bad!
  • Horrible Ending

Ok I have read the book and thought it was OK. So, when I heard there was a movie for it I was really excited. The whole story was alright, but I think the only reason why I understood most of it was because of the book. Overall, the ending could not have been worse. The story just stops without telling you anything. This movie hardly lives up to the book.
