Description

Gallipoli is Australian director Peter Weir's (The Truman Show, Witness) story of how the irresistible lure of adventure and the unknown, combined with national pride, bring two young men (Mel Gibson and Mark Lee) together in the Australian army in 1915. They cross continents and great oceans, climb pyramids and walk through the ancient sands of Egypt to join their regiment at the fateful battle of Gallipoli. The echoes of history blend with the friends' compelling destiny as they become part of a legendary World War 1 confrontation between Australia and the German allied Turks- a battle that is to Australians what the Alamo is to Americans.

If you want to understand a little about Australian culture and their sense of humor then this movie provides that means. See this film as Australia's "Gettysburg", Gallipoli was the battlefield that gave birth to Australia's sense of nationhood after its became an separate state from the UK in 1901. This film provides a background of Australian attitudes to helping the "Mother Country" in WW1, top the snse that men wanted to rush off to the great adventure. Google ANZAC Day and this will help you to frame what Gallipoli means to Australians. This is a classic Aussie film
  • Great story, but...

Mel steals the show with an amazing performance, but the film unnecessarily feels the need to decry the British and French contribution. The British were all snobs, idiots and left the Aussies to do all the fighting according to this movie. Unfortunately the facts (look them up) were that twice as many Brits died at Gallipoli as did Australians and more Frenchmen died at Gallipoli than Australians. The Turks are also shamefully marginalised. A missed opportunity to make an epic that would have stood as more than just a good action film.
  • A good movie.

I watch this movie in my school as we are learning about ww1 and all the countrys in it. I'm also A+ studient in the class and i know alot about world and American history, but we never learned much about counties like Australia. I didn't even know Australia was in ww1, but then again they were control by Britian. Also at first i was like why are we watching this movie to my teacher and then after a wild i began to like it. I think everone who is into history should watch it, It also has Mel Gibbison in it so for people who are fans of him. On other hands its a very sad movie and really make you think of how scared they must have been fighting in the battle of Gallipoli.

This was a story of how young Aussies during WWI where made to in believe the excitement and adventure of war. This is not a blood and guts war movie but a movie with a conscience and meaning. Great direction by Peter Weir.

Without doubt the best Aussie movie made, and Mel's best work. Given the action, suspense and emotion, and the haunting music (Adagio and Oxygene), its a must see

DVD or VHS release dates are meaningless. Only Theatrical Release dates count for anything. Here the real theatrical release date is 1981, but they list the release date as 1999.
