Malèna

Boy, do we need a film like this to be revived now. What at first seems a humorous coming of age film evolves into a powerful reflection on mob mentality, the cruelty of gossip, and the destructiveness of objectification of one another, especially women. We are teased into objectifying the sexy and beautiful Malena and by the end of the film we realize we the viewers have been guilty of participating with citizens of this Sicilian town in a gross injustice. The film provides a path for our redemption as we come to see the full humanity of Malena and how shallow judgments by both men and woman can cause great harm to all involved. Yet the film never loses its humor even as a young boy grows up and acts to do what is right.
